Intuicom to Provide Communication Solution for the Strainmeters on the Plate Boundary Observatory Project

Boulder, CO, March 29, 2007 - Intuicom, Inc.™, a leader in wireless data networks, has announced that is has been selected by UNAVCO to provide communication solutions for the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO) Project. Intuicom, which has provided the wireless solution to the GPS portion of the PBO project, has been chosen to provide real-time wireless data communications for strainmeter instruments on the project.

The PBO project is part of Earthscope, a national Earth Science program to explore the structure and evolution of the North American continent and understand processes controlling earthquakes and volcanoes. The strainmeters are used in conjunction with precision GPS to observe and gather observations along the three-dimensional strain field resulting from active plate boundary deformation across the Western United States. UNAVCO was awarded the establishment of much of the Plate Boundary Observatory.

A total of 105 borehole strainmeters (BSM) will be installed under the PBO program. Accessing the data on these remote instruments introduces a unique set of challenges including low power requirements, bandwidth demand, harsh environments, and long transmission distances. Intuicom provided solutions specifically developed for such applications.

“We are pleased to offer a solution to UNAVCO and the PBO project that met the high demands of the project. Many of the critical features to these solutions have evolved form years of working with in extreme and remote environments,” said Tom Foley, President of Intuicom, Inc. “In turn, much of what we learn and develop for these challenging programs adds value to our standard product offerings”.
